What Drives You?

1 Cor 13:1-3 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. NKJV

Love is not preached very often in our churches… please correct me if I’m wrong! But I often wonder why? Yet the greatest commandment is…

Matt 22:37 Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.' NKJV

There are 3 commandments here…

  • Love God
  • Love your neighbour
  • Love yourself

How can I love others if I struggle to love myself?
How can I appreciate others if I do not appreciate myself?
How can I be patient with others if cannot be patient with myself?
How can I respect others if I do not respect myself?

Oh the quick 'Christianese' answer is…. “Well God loves you!”

This is true, but how does that become a reality for me? How can I know, that I know this love He has for me which makes my heart not just convinced but immovable and grounded?

Good question? Is this something you struggle with?

You are not alone!

Believe by faith....

Faith is ‘a substance’ which is the tangible evidence of things hoped for. Heb 11:1

Hope is not a substance, it is a vision or dream of something which does not exist. Hope on it’s own will not bring the vision or dream into existence… it needs help.

I can believe in God’s love for me by faith, is that my hope… to feel loved and accepted by God?

Or is this something happening to me with no faith needed on my part?

I need to be loved, the world offers love but cannot fulfil it. Relationships cannot feed on themselves as they will dry up…. no wonder divorce rates are so high.

People who struggle with loving themselves (in the right way) also struggle with receiving. Because the idea they have of themselves is poor (low self esteem) so they feel unworthy to receive.

Why?

Shame and guilt? Failures, short comings, bad decisions they have made, all go together to build the idea of ‘I am unworthy... I never get the breaks, ‘it’s ok for them but not me’.

So what many of us do is fill our lives with doing. This gives us purpose, worth and a sense of belonging, our three basic needs. Giving to get. But does doing bring us acceptance? We might just be the ‘clanging cymbal’ Paul talks of.

So what is the difference? True acceptance cannot be based on ‘the do’. If I stopped doing then I would no longer be accepted.

True acceptance is based on ‘the who’.

John 3:16 ‘God so loved the world…’

That’s you and me….

Paul said that faith ‘comes by hearing….hearing the Word of God'. Rom 10:17

We are made in His image, but we are born out of His company because of inherited sin. However the image identifies with its Maker, when the Maker speaks to the image as they are one of the same…. there is recognition. When the image seeks the truth it resonates to it, when we hear God’s truth this resonation becomes revelation to us. God loves you.

This love is so strong it causes us to reflect it, light….. salt.

We cannot help but be the light and the salt.

We can tell when we are out of touch with this knowing by the fruit we bear.

What is the fruit?

Gal 5: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

So this is my flag, if I am not these things then I am suffering from not knowing I am loved. I can’t ask God to love me more because He has already poured Himself out completely for me.

Jesus sent a companion. The Holy Spirit, the third member of the God team. The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God. Jesus prayed in the garden that ‘I be in them and they (you and me) be in Me’.

John 17:22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one…NKJV

When we rely on the spirit of the flesh then we are driven by filling our needs of acceptance value and purpose via our own strength. When we connect with the Holy Spirit living in us then we are driven by love. And all this by faith.

Faith is substance… so what is my substance?

I take the first step, I choose to be patient, I choose to be kind, I choose to be gentle.... I choose to love myself because God loves me. Only then can the power of God rush in and make this your experience. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are enabled by our willingness and our choices.

God will work with your substance… which is you acting on your choices. Then the Love of God will flow in you and through you and you will not be able to contain it...

you cannot help but be a light in this world as a result!
