The Lighthouse

My last Vibe was on Matthew 5:14 I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!

I am on the beach with a torch, in the dark. This is okay to guide one boat into a mooring. But if I was to use the same torch to guide a ship into the harbour, it would be inadequate.

My small torch is for the immediate surrounding. On the other hand, a lighthouse is far more powerful and be a can guide to those further away.

I love lighthouses. They are there to guide the ships in the dark of the night. To protect them, against crashing on the rocks. They are reliable, consistent and never fade.

When I was a child I visited a lighthouse in Wainiomata, New Zealand (where I grew up) on the coast. I was amazed to see that normal light bulbs were used. It was the ‘projection’ that made the light beam go far and wide.

Jesus is the light of the world. He lives in us. We are a small light but with Him we can become a big ‘light’ to those who are in the dark.

I liken God to a lighthouse because He can take our small light and turn it into a big one!

He is a Strong Tower

When we run to our ‘strong tower’ we find safety, security and peace. When times are difficult, we go to God.

Proverbs 18:10 (KJV) The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

Same verse in the Message bible reads…

God’s name is a place of protection; good people can run there to be safe.

We then find our strength and our answers in Him, He becomes our ‘projector’ when we reflect His light. This is much more powerful than what our small ‘torch’ can do.

  1. What if you feel like you are in that storm?
  2. Run to Him! He is our strong tower!
  3. Spend time with Him; find out what He says about you.
  4. While you are safe in that tower get to know Him.

To be that light, we must learn how to live the righteous life (gain knowledge). We need to renew our mind with tools that work.

In Dan’s book, there is a tool box. Too many times we have not ‘replaced’ that torch light bulb. We didn’t have the right tool to fix it.

Here are just a few ‘tools’ that don’t work which is often the light from our torches...

Raising our voice
Over talking
Impatience
Manipulation
Physical Violence

We replace that wrong tool with the tools that work with a bulb from God's lighthouse...

A calm response
Listening
Patience
Do to others as you would have them do to you
Time out

Proverbs 15:2 (MSG)

Knowledge flows like spring water from the wise;

fools are leaky faucets, dripping nonsense.
