Your Cheer Squad

1 Corth 9:25 (Msg)

You've all been to the stadium and seen the athlete’s race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You're after one that's gold eternally.

When an athlete faces a race they have to talk positive to themselves that they can win the race. If they don’t they may feel defeated already.

In our course Session 3 it is about Renewed Thinking. Dan says that self talk is a vital tool that must be harnessed in a positive way.

Positive thoughts bring positive action and therefore change.

How we talk to ourselves is vital. We are our worse critic. If we continually say ‘you have blown it’ and we stay in that frame of mind, satan comes along and uses that to his advantage. You will get very negative and probably go down the road of, ’your not good enough, you can’t do it!’

When we are in our race we must have a great cheer squad. Nothing is sadder than when an athlete is running and no one is there to cheer them on. Imagine being in the race and hearing people calling out the names of the other runners, but not yours.

I attended Hillsong Church and we had Hillsong Conference last week and that to me is one of my biggest ‘cheer squads’. I felt encouraged, built up, energized and enthused to not only stay in the race but run with excellence and purpose. My local church inputs into me, they are a fantastic cheer squad for my race.

I also have family and friends who speak into my life, I hear them on the sidelines saying ‘Common you can do it, keep going’. This is so important to my race.

There is one who is the biggest and best encouragement to me and that is God himself. The Bible is full of words that build me, equip me, bless me and show me how to stay in the race.

If we keep looking back we may stumble. It is good just to have a quick glance (to learn) but don’t dwell on it. If we run our race looking back we miss opportunities. We see them but it is too late. We must look forward, focus on the prize.

We teach our course at One80TC (Teen Challenge) each week. These guys have courage to sort out their lives. They have stumbled in their race but they got back up again and they have a whole new cheer squad. The staff, the church and the volunteers are their new cheer squad. They are an encouragement to me how they are sticking with the program to change their lives.

We are a part of their cheer squad. As God speaks into our lives and builds us up, we therefore can do the same for others.

I said to one of the guys one day,

‘We have come too far to go back’...

This is so true. So therefore, let us press on.

Hebrews 12:1(Msg)

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honour, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he ploughed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!
